February is Heart Month!

Heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States but a healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk of heart disease. Here are some tips to begin developing a healthy lifestyle:

  • Eat Smart…cooking more meals at home allows you to control the amount of sodiumand the ingredients used. Keep your kitchen stocked with fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.
  • Add Color…include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Single serving fruits and vegetables can be cheaper than vending machine snacks. Buy produce in bulk and freeze the extra for a quick snack!
  • Move More…try to start with at least 150 minutes of exercise a week, be sure to warm up for at least 5-10 minutes to increase flexibility and prevent injury. You are more likely to stick with forms of exercise you enjoy!
  • Be Well…getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness and managing stress will help keep your mind and body fit. Take a few minutes daily to calm yourself-even a lunchtime walk can rejuvenate and refresh!
